MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis teen is facing first degree murder charges after allegedly striking and killing a 10-month-old with a dumbbell.

Tuesday, officials would not release detailed information about the incident because of the ages of the children involved.  However,  officials at Juvenile Court said the 15-year-old boy is severely mentally challenged, and he will undergo a lengthy series of psychological evaluations.

Doctors will then determine whether or not the teenager is competent enough to step foot in a courtroom.  That evaluation will likely take three to four weeks.

Meanwhile, Memphis police investigators have charged the 15-year-old boy with first degree murder in perpetration of child abuse.  The teen's name has not been released because he is a juvenile.

Investigators have not released the circumstances surrounding this case, who was watching the children, or why they ended up in the same room without supervision.  Police are expected to release more information, including the baby's name, in the coming days.

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center will raise a flag in the baby's memory at their offices at 1085 Poplar Avenue on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m.
