MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis firefighters and EMA officials are puzzled by a strange substance discovered flowing through a city neighborhood.

A dark green mystery chemical was found in a drainage ditch along Getwell Road.

"When we arrived on the scene, we noticed there was a product - an unknown substance" said Lt. Wayne Cooke with the Memphis Fire Department.

"We're not certain if it was dumped into the ditch, or where it's coming from at this point. We haven't determined the origin at this time." Firefighters wasted no time stopping the flow of the substance. They used dikes to contain it within a half mile area.

"There are many products that we have - equipment to dike it up. And a lot of times, we use the ground, the soil, to dike it up," Cooke said.

Two truck loads of sand were brought in as officials collected a sample of the chemical for testing Friday.

The mystery substance doesn't appear to be a threat to residents.

"There are no fumes coming from the product and there's no imminent danger at this time," said Cooke.

Investigators say they hope to identify the substance soon.
