MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash said Wednesday the district is virtually guaranteed a $100 million grant from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Cash joined school board members and executive staff Wednesday afternoon to announce the district's selection as one of five finalists for the grant.

Last year, Microsoft founder Bill Gates announced he was making teacher effectiveness the foundation's number one goal.  Memphis City Schools submitted a proposal, including ways the district would use the money to enhance teacher quality, pay, and continued education.

"We're gonna have to really mess something up - fall into the Mississippi," Cash said. "The city is gonna have to do something that says we don't want this for us not to get this."

A final decision on the Gates Foundation grant will be announced in late October or early November.
