New portal helps DeSoto County parents stay connected

HERNANDO, MS (WMC-TV) - Keeping up with your child's school work is easy if you're a parent of a DeSoto County school student, thanks to a new program.

A student database named 'ParentPortal' was specifically designed to give parents the most updated information on what their children are doing in school.  The program was unveiled as this new school year began.

"They can see attendance, they can see their classes, the grades that the teachers have graded and put in their electronic grade book," said Martha McIntosh, Director of Technology for DeSoto County Schools.

McIntosh says this is 'real time,' and that parents have access to it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All they have to do is go to the school and set up an ID and password, which gives them the student information.

She says that since its launch the board has received positive reviews.

"We had a site similar last year," she said. "This one's more user friendly, and we are hearing nothing but positive feedback."

One of those who applauds the new site is Natalie Welch, who has two high school students. Welch says it is a great way to find out what's really going on without having to ask.

"It's very important because a lot of times kids don't tell you when they have tests, especially when they get older," she said. "They don't tell you what they make on it, so you can go online, lunch breaks, home and you can check on grades, assignments, tests."

McIntosh said the district is now working on plans to give all high school students to ability to register for classes online by next year.
