HORN LAKE, MS (WMC-TV) - Students and local officials in Horn Lake are excited about a familiar technical school's expansion into the area.

Delta Technical College has moved into a 40,000 square foot building on Interstate Boulevard, and education director Joan Hankins says enrollment is booming.

"A little over a year ago, we were at about 165 students. And since we moved here in the last year, we've boomed to about 450. So, it has grown by leaps and bounds," she said.

The college offers courses in various trades for people who may not be ready for the traditional two or four year college routes. Classes include medical assisting and coding, cosmetology, HVAC, dental assisting and welding.

Amanda Nance, a recent graduate of the medical coding program, said Delta's programs fit perfectly into her schedule.

"Because I couldn't commit myself to two years or four years, so the nine month program was really a good option for me - especially having a family," she said.

Officials say the job placement rate is close to 80 percent.

Kevon McArthur says studying welding has been an enjoyable experience, and the future is full of possibilities.

"I have no complaints. I'd advise anybody to come on down," he said. "You learn something that you can take down the road. You might be a welder this time, an instructor the next."

School officials say they are looking at other allied health and mechanical programs to introduce in the next 18 to 24 months. Those programs would be developed using input from local businesses.
