Man shot in Whitehaven H.S. parking lot after football game

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police are searching for the man who shot an 18-year-old in the parking lot of Whitehaven High School as hundreds of fans were leaving a football game Saturday night.

Moments after the Whitehaven Tigers pounced on the Hamilton Wildcats in a 53-0 game, gunfire quickly ended the celebration.

"After the game, we were all going to our cars, and next thing you know everyone broke out running," said Whitehaven football player Julius Lewis. "I was walking with one of my coaches and they told me to get down - after that they walked me to my car. People were running around and hopping in cars just to be safe."

Whitehaven Freshman Raylon Smith was one of the many who started to run.

"I walked off about to go home. I heard gunshots, so I ran back the other way," he said.

Police officers who were working the game heard shots fired in the school parking lot. They found the 18-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. Two women, ages 22 and 23, showed police that the rear window of their Honda, which had been shot out.

Ray Holland was driving by the high school when the commotion broke loose.

"People running every direction," Holland said. "All the way across the highway. I had to hit my breaks real hard because one time, he just ran out in front of me. Wasn't paying attention to the light or anything. Looked like he was real frightened and scared."

Police say the gunman escaped on foot.

The 18-year-old victim was listed in non-critical condition.
