SOMERVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Investigators in Fayette County say a 9-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed by his 8-year-old brother and the wound was not self-inflicted as they originally thought.
The Fayette County Sheriff's Department said in a news release Monday that the death of Dante Boyd of Somerville on Aug. 18 is still being considered accidental and no charges will be filed against the boy, who was not identified.
Police initially believed that Boyd was playing with the gun and shot himself in the chest. Based on evidence from the medical examiner and statements taken from the other child, detectives say they now believe the 8-year-old was playing with the weapon and accidentally fired it, shooting his brother.
The victim's stepfather, Willie Dee Allen, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and remains in jail without bond.
