MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A 21-year-old mother and her child were found with their throats cut inside their Memphis home late Tuesday night.

News of the attack shocked many nearby residents, including the woman's neighbor, Luther Wilson.

"I heard a lot of noise out here last night," he said.

Wilson, who lives at the intersection of Durham and Wagon Wheel, said he could not have imagined what happened across the street from his house.

"I saw two ambulances come, and I knew then that something's going on that's not right," he said.

Wilson counted nine police cars, responding to a report that a 21-year-old mother and her 2-year-old son had their throats cut.

Wednesday, a Memphis Police Department spokesperson said a preliminary investigation revealed the 21-year-old mother may have been responsible for the injuries to both people.

That news had already spread through the neighborhood.

"It really upset me," Wilson said. "I didn't think that she would do nothing like that, but you never know."

The mother, who has not been identified, was taken to The MED, while her son was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.  Police said both will likely survive.

For his part, Wilson said he will stay vigilant, always watching his neighborhood.

"I really couldn't believe that," he said. "Really couldn't."

Memphis Police have not charged the 21-year-old mother, but say she will undergo tests to determine her mental health.
