MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) -  A 14-year-old boy is recovering after being shot while walking home Wednesday night.  Investigators said 14-year-old Donchavel Lester was walking in the 3700 block of Rosa near Mable in South Memphis when the shooting happened.

Thursday afternoon, Chereka Hankins still didn't know what to think of her son being shot.

"I'm hurt and confused, because I want to know what happened," she said.

Hankins said her son was leaving a friend's house around 9:30 Wednesday night.

"He said he was walking home," she said. "A car pulled up and said 'That's him,' and just started shooting.  He ran back to his friend's house."

Hankins said her son was struck twice.

"Once in the side. It missed all his major organs. His kidney and everything is fine," she said. "He was hit once in the calf. That bullet hit a bone and his leg is broken."

Hankins said she's still trying to make sense of the crime.

"What would make another child or another adult want to shoot at a child?" she asked.

While her son recovers at the Med, Hankins hopes whoever is responsible will be caught.

"Just turn yourself in, because guns are nothing to play with," she said.

If you know anything about this shooting, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
