MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Opinions about Thursday night's Memphis Mayoral Debate were as varied as the candidates that discussed the issues.  Friday, at the Cupboard Restaurant on Union Avenue, customers had plenty to say about Thursday night's event.

Most people we talked to seemed to agree that Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton won the debate.

"He is the most sensible person we've got," said Memphian Carlton Sumner. "He answered the questions honestly, and in some cases with passion."

"The experience Mayor Wharton has put him up front," Don Moore added.

Wrestling celebrity Jerry Lawler wound up surprising a lot of people.

"He seems sincere," Moore said. "Like he's worried about the city."

"Jerry Lawler was smarter than I thought he was," Carl Smith added. "He did pretty good."

Many said they found former Memphis City Council member Carol Chumney's frequent blinking distracting.

"I can't listen to her, because all I'm thinking about when she's talking is how she's blinking her eyes all the time," Sumner said.

With the special election more than a month and a half away, talk of politics will continue around town for many days to come.
