MY TURN: Failing the no fail policy

Many parents and teachers are quick to give the Memphis City School system an "F" for its new no-fail policy involving grade school students. This is just the latest tussle between parents, teachers and the administration in what has been a contentious start to the new school year.

Parents always want the best for their children so it goes without saying that any major change and many minor changes are going to elicit strong emotional responses. Dr. Kriner Cash may be convinced that this plan and other recent changes are the best ideas anywhere, but he must also understand their success depends on his ability sell them to parents and teachers.

A controversial change involving public education deserves a public hearing. Involving stakeholders in the process from the start is critically important. The question for Dr. Cash is how far out in front of his army does he want to get?

He should be mindful of this simple old axiom -- if you get too far in front of your troops, you start looking like the enemy.
