48 arrested in Whitehaven crime sweep

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested 48 people in a crime sweep in Whitehaven late Friday night.

Deputies and federal agents descended on a high-crime area of Elvis Presley Boulevard between Brooks Road and Shelby Drive, where they seized cash, one weapon, 50 grams of marijuana and over $133,000 in counterfeit merchandise.

Authorities also issued nearly 200 tickets for traffic violations in the area.

Shelby County Sheriff Mark Lutrell says the crime sweep was prompted by requests from Whitehaven residents.

"A group of ministers in this area called me and asked me to come down for a meeting," he said. "Came down and not only were there ministers, there were some school principals, there were residents from various neighborhood groups, and they were very frustrated."

Lutrell also says authorities identified six gang members in the sweep.
