MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two young boys are recovering after they were seriously burned Tuesday in an early morning fire inside their home.
The fire, which broke out in Marseeta Dowdy's southeast Memphis apartment complex, sent family members running for their lives.
"My little nephew, he seen the smoke coming from the walls on the outside," family member Michelle Dowdy said.
Dowdy said her 6-year-old nephew, Marcellus, woke up his little sister and his mom, Marseeta Dowdy, who had been sleeping in the living room. Marseeta immediately rushed to a back bedroom to rescue Marcellus.
"He was still in the bed, but the mother went in there and grabbed him," Dowdy said.
However, Marcus and his 15-year-old brother, Marcellus, ended up with burns trying to escape the flames. Both were taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center for treatment.
Relatives said it was the third apartment fire the family has suffered through in less than a year. Family members spent the morning boarding up the apartment and trying to console injured children's mother, who saved her kids, but lost so much in the fire.
"She's a lot upset and she's down right now because she lost everything in there," Michelle Dowdy said.
Family members blamed electrical problems for Tuesday's fire, as well as previous fires at the complex. Investigators have not determined a cause.
