Gleason, TN (WMC-TV) - A former schoolmate of the man suspected of raping five Mid-South women says he seemed like a normal kid at the time.

Katrina Roland says she first met Bruce Tuck when the two attended first grade together in the small town of Gleason, Tennessee. They were classmates for 11 years.

"He was pretty outgoing, talkative, said what was on his mind," Roland said.

She says Tuck was an involved student who was on the school yearbook staff. "Kind of nerdish in school. But not one who set back and never said anything."

Roland says she can remember only one thing that seemed odd.

"One of the girls I went to school with was kind of scared of him.  He would make it clear to her he had a crush on her," she said. "That's no more than what average Joes would do."

Infact, Tuck seemed so normal that Roland almost hired him recently.

"I almost put him to work about six weeks ago.  He asked me for a job. I almost put him to work, so I was just kind of floored and shocked," she said.

As for what went wrong in Tuck's life to change him from the person Roland knew in high school into a serial rapist, Roland says she's at a loss.

"He had a good family background.  They done everything they could for him."

People in Gleason say Tuck's parents are pillars of the community. And Roland says she hopes no one tries to blame them for what happened.

Tuck is a reminder to Gleason, that small town life doesn't necessarily equal small crimes.
