TIPTON COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - A Munford High School teacher was shot to death Sunday night by his 15-year-old daughter at their residence on Marshall Cove.

Officials said Douglas VanNeste was killed in the shooting.

In a press release, Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley said VanNeste was asleep at the time of the shooting, but the specific events that led to the shooting are still under investigation.

Tipton County Sheriff's Department spokesperson said VanNeste's daughter is not in custody while investigators try to determine what happened.

"Anytime you have the death of an individual it can be homicide, accidental, or it can be self inflicted, and so we can eliminate it was not self inflicted for sure," Turner said.

Turner said family members were cooperating with investigators.

VanNeste was a history teacher at Munford High School, where his father also teaches.  Grief counselors will be on hand when classes resume Tuesday.

VanNeste's 15-year-old daughter is home-schooled.
