MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - City officials said Monday they consider the launch of beer sales at University of Memphis football games a huge success.

Previously, city leaders have said the Liberty Bowl is operating at a deficit of more than $250,000.  They were hoping beer sales would bring in an estimated $200,000 over the course of the season.

Sunday, total beer sales for the University of Memphis game against Ole Miss totaled more than $114,000 - more than 40 percent of the goal for the entire season.

No beer was sold after the third quarter of Sunday's game, and beer was not sold in student sections of the stadium.

Sales from food and soda totaled more than $250,000.

The Tigers play at home again on September 19th against UT Martin.
