MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A month ago, Tiger Nation began marking its calendar with the release of the University of Memphis basketball non-conference schedule. Now, fans can complete that yearly exercise with the announcement of Memphis' Conference USA slate on Tuesday.
Game times and television contests are to be announced at a later date.
"Conference USA is a league that is getting better every year, and 2009-10 is no different,' said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "I believe this is the year that Conference USA will be a multiple-bid NCAA Tournament league, and there's going to be a lot of exciting games in the conference this season.
"We realize that, because of our recent success in the conference, we have a bull's-eye on our back, and we're going to need support from Tiger Nation to help us through this tough C-USA schedule."
The recent success Pastner referred to is the Tigers' 61-game Conference USA overall win streak and 49-game C-USA regular season win streak, both of which are the second-longest in NCAA Division I history. Kentucky has the overall streak at 64-straight league wins from 1945-50, and UCLA has the longest regular season conference win streak at 50 straight from 1970-74.
When Memphis tips off C-USA play Jan. 9 at Southern Miss, 1,408 days will have passed since the Tigers last dropped a league contest. Memphis' last C-USA loss was an 80-74 setback at UAB Mar. 2, 2006.
The two possible record-breaking dates in the streak are Jan. 13 and Jan. 20, both home games at FedExForum. Memphis tries for the regular season conference win streak record against East Carolina Jan. 13, and then goes for the overall league win streak mark against UTEP Jan. 20.
The Tigers play league home-and-home series with Houston, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulsa and UAB. In addition to hosting East Carolina and UTEP, Memphis welcomes UCF to the Bluff City Feb. 10. The Tigers' C-USA road-only trips are to Rice Jan. 16, Marshall Jan. 27 and Tulane Feb. 17.
The 2010 Conference USA Tournament is scheduled for Mar. 10-13 at the BOK Center in downtown Tulsa, Okla.
