MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis mayoral candidate called on another candidate to drop out of race during a fiery interview Thursday.

Candidate Carol Chumney said Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton isn't doing his job and should withdraw from the city mayor's race.

"I think he should step out and do his job," she said. "Under the county charter he is supposed to devote his full time to his job."

Action News 5 caught up with Wharton for reaction at the unveiling of a county plan to save resources for future generations.

"I'm spending entirely too much time on someone who, clearly by comments, is not deserving of my time," he said. "That's it. I'm not going to let people like that for whatever their limitations are.  I'm not going to get pulled off on that."

Wharton, of course, does not agree he is not doing his job.  But Chumney says in the seven years he has been mayor here has not gotten results.

"The fact that infant mortality has not gone down," she said. "It was the worst in the county when he took office in 2002. It's the worst in the county now in 2009."

Chumney says The MED is having problems that need to be addressed by the mayor and consolidation is at a stand still.

"She is totally irrelevant to how we're going to run our campaign and that's all I'm going to say," Wharton said.

Chumney said if A C Wharton had any integrity, he would withdraw. But Wharton says that is absurd, and he's not getting out of the race for city mayor.
