MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis sophomore Angel Garcia tore his right anterior cruciate and will miss the upcoming season, leaving the Tigers with just eight scholarship players.
Tigers coach Josh Pastner announced the injury Friday. Garcia was hurt during a non-contact drill Thursday during individual workouts.
The Puerto Rico native sat out three months last season while the NCAA clearinghouse checked his eligibility, then was limited to practicing with the team. The 6-foot-11 forward will have surgery within two weeks with up to eight months of rehabilitation.
This is the second player lost for the season to a knee injury. Martin Ngaloro tore knee ligaments in August and is staying in France.
Memphis opens the season Nov. 13 against Jackson State.
