BBB warns against local home security company

COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - Judy Glass agrees that having a home security system is a good idea.  But when a home security company approached her elderly mother in law, she became concerned.

"I realized he was not with ADT but he was in the neighborhood targeting ADT customers," she said.

The owner of Memphis based The Alarm Company, Tom Brady, was canvassing Covington neighborhoods last week.  He says he was selling and installing home security systems.

"We in no way lead anybody to believe we were with their previous company to get an upgrade," Brady said. "They would have to switch companies to do it."

Glass became concerned after she said Brady got agitated when she wanted to wait on signing any paperwork.

"He told me it was a one time only.  He would not be in Covington again and he would be in Ripley the next day," she said.

"I'm sorry she felt I was agitated," Brady said. "It was ok with me if she said no or she wanted to wait."

The Alarm Company has an F rating with the Memphis Better Business Bureau.  The BBB has received 23 complaints about The Alarm Company in the past three years. Two of these complaints are unresolved.

The BBB's Randy Hutchinson says he's concerned about the nature of the complaints.

"Many of these complaints allege they are misleading people into thinking they are with customers' current company and somehow convincing them this is an upgrade," Hutchinson said.

"If we're not an A rated company based on performance - 4,000 thousand installations and two unresolved complaints - I don't know what we need to do to get an A rating," Brady said.

And even though The Alarm Company is a licensed company, the BBB says it's always better to be safe than sorry when dealing with door to door sales people.

"If my mother in law thought he was with her security system, other people could think the same thing," Glass said.

Again, The Alarm Company is a legitimate, licensed company,  but the BBB says they have numerous complaints about deceptive sales techniques.

Just remember, take your time with door to door sales - if it's a good deal today, it'll be a good deal tomorrow.
