There are 26 letters in the alphabet...but to fans of Big Time College Sports, only 3 letters count.
Those letters stand for Bowl Championship Series...
The University of Memphis WANTS desperately to be in a BCS League...and now it's taking steps to try and make that happen.
The U of M is putting former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese on its' payroll.
He's being brought in as an advisor for the reported sum of $5-Thousand a Month for the Next 6 months..to show the Tigers what they need to do get that B.C.S. Tag by their name.
Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson is a longtime friend of Tranghese's.
Tigers Assistant A.D. Bob Winn says the U of M has already given Tranghese a long looksee of where the Tigers are right now.
Winn says, "WE SHOWED HIM ALL OUR FACILITIES, SHOWED HIM OUR FINANCIALS, WE'D LIKE TO KNOW WHERE WE STAND AS COMPARED TO AVERAGE BCS CONFERENCE TEAMS. TO WEE WHERE WE NEED TO TAKE OUT PROGRAM IN THE FUTURE.. TO GET ULTIMATELY WHERE WE WANT TO GO."
Winn says the obvious reason for a move is simple. MONEY.
You could substitute Dollar Signs for BCS teams.. Not so in Conference USA, Memphis' current home.
"SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS DIFFERENCE ANNUALLY," says Winn. "DEFINITELY MORE THAN WHAT WE CURRENTLY RECEIVE. LARGE SUMS COULD BE DEDICATED TO FACILITIES AND OTHER MAJOR PROJECTS TO HELP IMPROVE OUR PROGRAMS."
Winn says Tranghese' consultancy with Memphis is open ended.
He cautions fans the University is trying to position itself for a possibility that could be 6-moths, or 5 or 10 years down the road.
However long it takes, Winn says the U of M is diligent on getting there.
