MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - On the same day Memphis Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery made national headlines when he fist bumped the Dalai Lama, his wife's car was hit by a stray bullet intended for a pair of pitbulls.

Gary Priestas, a security officer hired by Memphis City Schools, fired two shots at two charging pitbulls in the parking lot of the MCS North district office. The bullets did not hit the dogs, but one of them did hit a black Buick Century belonging to Mary Lowery.

The mayor pro tem questions whether it was legal for the guard to fire his weapon on school property.

The incident has raised concerns about security in an area frequently traveled by students, teachers and administrators.

Priestas works for Hawkeye Security, a company contracted by the Memphis City School District.

He is not facing disciplinary action because school officials say he was defending himself against an attack.
