Most of us here in the MidSouth recognize the National Civil Rights Museum as a community treasure, and the Museum's Freedom Awards program deserves own level of special recognition. Since 1991, the Freedom Awards events have helped our region engage with the premiere leaders in our country and throughout the world.

This week's visit by the Dalai Lama underscored what an asset this awards program is to our region. Many local residents got a chance to interact with this international religious figure as he made himself available for several different functions while he was here.

But for the Freedom Awards, it's safe to say, that he would not have been in Memphis this week, and that's of course, true of many of the other prominent people who received this recognition in the past.

Beverly Robertson and the Museum staff should be applauded for the success of this project, and the same is true of the Hyde Family Foundation, International Paper, FedEx, Nike and the other companies that sponsor the Freedom Award events.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
