Andy's Rest. Scorecard: Susan Griffin, plus scores 9/20/09

MEMPHIS (WMC TV) - Lenny's Sub Shops' 11-year streak of passing health inspections at each of its locations just ended -- on Concourse B at the airport.

The Lenny's franchise at Memphis International failed its health inspection with a 61.  The inspector's report cites:

a ham thawing in the sink at a "potentially hazardous food temp."  The inspector advised Lenny's to "properly thaw" the meat

An employee "...did not properly wash, rinse & sanitize" a cooking utensil

Two citations for "fruit flies"

The inspector used the word "dirty" 10 times to describe restaurant conditions.

Airport security procedures prohibited Action News 5 from inspecting Lenny's.  Franchise owner Edith Kelly-Green called us from Washington, D.C., to say the health department sprang its inspection while the store's manager was off-site at a training session.  She said management worked quickly to correct the critical violations.

Susan Goyette, spokesperson for the airport's concessionaire, HMSHost of Bethesda, MD, released this statement:

The health inspection finding on Lenny's Subs is unusual considering HMSHost's track record for the past six months, which includes several top scores of 90 and above. 

Although Lenny's operates as a sub-tenant to HMSHost, this score was reviewed as soon as possible and the critical violation issues were addressed immediately.

In fact, the health inspector returned on Sept. 29 for the follow up inspection and Lenny's received passing scores on all previous critical violations. 

HMSHost will continue to monitor Lenny's operation and its team with the goal of reaching a top score as soon as possible.

Words cannot adequately describe how fun it is to have Susan Griffin serve you a cocktail.  You have to see her "flare" in action.

In fact, that's what her routine is called:  "flaring."  Tossing bottles, catching bottles, pouring several drinks at the same time...

"It's amazing!" exclaimed Mary Maxwell of Cordova, one of Griffin's barstool groupies.  "She always catches the bottle in her hand."

There's another "catch" to Susan's showmanship.

It won her the store flaring championship at the Wolfchase location.  Now she's a finalist in TGIFriday's Southeast regionals.  For the last three years, the competition's proceeds have gone to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help grant the wishes of sick children.

"The first year, we received a little over $1,100," said Liz Larkin, President/CEO of Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South.  "The second, a little over $5,000, so for her to already have made it to the regionals, just congrats to her, and we are so proud!"

"We figured if there's one way to raise money, this would be a great way (to) get everyone involved," said Griffin, who lives in Midtown Memphis.  "We chose Make-A-Wish just because it's such a great cause."

Great cause, great customer service...make mine a double, Susan!
