OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South school received the highest honor awarded to a public school during a ceremony Friday morning.

The weather moved the celebration inside, but that didn't rain on the parade at Center Hill Elementary in Olive Branch.

The school received Blue Ribbon Accreditation for Academic Superiority and Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. The award honors public and private schools that for academic excellence - schools that have made dramatic gains in student achievement and helped close the gaps in achievement among minority and disadvantaged students.

"It's such an honor," Principal Rebecca Dearden said. "I'm so stunned by all the support from the community, DeSoto County Schools, my staff, my students. It's just a wonderful honor."

Mississippi education officials say Center Hill serves as a role model for what all schools should be.

Center Hill Elementary is the first DeSoto County School to receive such recognition, but the county's superintendent of schools said it will not be the last.
