MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis-based FedEx Corporation Saturday unveiled a new addition to its fleet.

CEO Fred Smith introduced the new Boeing 777 cargo plane, which can fly from Memphis to China without stopping to refuel.

"It's going to revolutionize our system. We'll be able to leave later, give our customers more processing time. We'll burn about 18 percent less fuel," he said.

The plane can carry two football fields worth of cargo, and with less time spent refueling, it cuts three hours off of package delivery time.

"We've got to make a profit to stay in business, and I think this plane is going to help us do this for a long time to come," Smith said.

As Memphis' largest employer, FedEx is the lifeblood of the local economy. Forbes Magazine even refers to the corporation as the bellwether of the global economy.

Congressman Steve Cohen says Mid-Southerners can look forward to new jobs.

"It's a tremendous advancement in technology, and FedEx is first to utilize it, and it's right here in Memphis," he said. "It'll mean more cargo and more jobs."

FedEx employees like avionics technician Matt Smith were invited to the big unveiling during FedEx Family Day.

"The triple 7 is going to be an exciting asset to FedEx," he said.

The new Boeing 777 goes into operation at the start of next year. A second 777 will join the fleet next November.
