MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police are investigating the death of a 15-year-old boy.

According to police, officers were called to the 1200 block of Cannon around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. There, they found the boy, identified as 15-year-old Christopher Hughes, lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

Monday afternoon, Hughes' mother, Katrina Taylor, struggled to cope with her son's death.

"It's like I don't even have a heart or soul anymore," she said. "It's like I don't have anything to wake up for anymore, because he was my everyday."

Monday, just across the street from Taylor's home sat a memorial, marking the spot where authorities discovered Hughes lying on the ground, fatally wounded.

"My husband was holding him in his arms and he was just taking his last breath," Taylor said.

EMTs took the Hamilton High student to The MED in critical condition, where he later died.  Family and friends say Hughes was shot and killed by an acquaintance who claims it was an accident.

"It's sad," said Hughes' aunt, Sabrina Denton. "These kids need to put these guns down."

Hughes was the second teenager killed on Cannon this year.  Rozelle Green Jr.,  17, was murdered on the same block on March 11th.  Taylor said she hopes her son's death will be a wakeup call to end the violence.

"Right now I'm just lost because I want my baby," she said. "I know I can't have him."

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Hugh's death.
