MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Rusty Woods with the Christian Student Center at the University of Memphis says the recent vandalism at a soon-to-be fraternity house is senseless.

"I think hate breeds more hate, so I hate to see that kind of thing happen" said Woods.

Students noticed swastikas and other offensive writing on the house early Tuesday.

"The University strongly condemns that kind of thing. It expresses intolerance, prejudice, and all those negative things," University of Memphis spokesperson Curt Guenther said.

It took University of Memphis workers no time to clean up the graffiti.

"They did not get on the inside of the house. It was outside. Some spray paint on the outside. No damage on the inside," said Guenther.

The University owns the property and has been in negotiations with Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, who wants to lease it.

"They are a new fraternity on campus. I don't know when they begin to come on campus. They want to rent this house as their fraternity house" said Guenther.

The fraternity released this statement saying quote:

"Brothers of the Gamma Mu Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) noticed vandalism at 3604 Midland Avenue which was derogatory and disrespectful toward people of Jewish heritage. ZBT is a historically Jewish Greek-letter organization, and we are saddened and concerned by this incident."

Guenther said, "We hope it's a prank...somebody doing something because it was funny, but we don't know."
