Twice in the past month Mid South school principals have been charged with the crime of failing to report crimes on their campuses. These cases are certainly sparking a legitimate and important debate among parents, educators and law enforcement officials.

I think everyone understands that the people who work in public schools today are often faced with painfully difficult situations when it comes to maintaining order within their schools. Still, the answer here is pretty clear. Educators are not above the law when it comes to reporting potential crimes.

When parents send their children to school, they need to know that teachers and principals are doing everything possible to protect their loved ones from harm. When there is a serious problem, it should be properly disclosed to the parents and handled by the book.

In any event, there are state laws that require that certain potential crimes be reported to law enforcement authorities quickly. School principals are not exempted from those laws any more than the rest of us.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
