HERNANDO, TN (WMC-TV) - A 17-year-old Hernando resident remained in critical condition Monday after he and some friends were attacked by assailants wielding baseball bats very early Sunday morning.

According to DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco, the dispute began over text messages.

"That's the information we have: It happened maybe two or three months ago, they started texting each other, and people not agreeing on some terms of what young people agree on," Rasco said.

The beating allegedly happened near Malone and Sunset in Hernando, after the victim and his two friends were confronted by several suspects.  One of the victim's neighbors, who did not wish to be identified, said something needs to be done.

"It needs to be addressed. It needs to be taken care of," the neighbor said. "It's not just one anymore, it's three or for kids jumping kids."

Investigators said Gregory Jordan, David H. Jones, David L. Jones and two juveniles were arrested.  The senior Jones is the father of two of those in custody.  All were charged with aggravated assault, while the senior Jones was also charged with accessory after the fact.

The victim's neighbor said the Jones family is no stranger to the law.

"I know he has been in trouble," the neighbor said. "He's been to DCAC, been on probation, and its just a slap on the wrists nowadays."

Rasco said if the victim does not survive, charges against the suspects will be upgraded to first degree murder.
