Congratulations to Memphis Mayor-elect A.C. Wharton. Mayor Wharton earned a landslide victory, garnering votes from every neighborhood in the city with his "One Memphis" campaign theme.

That unifying slogan has a nice ring to it, but some of our community leaders don't want hear it. People like Memphis Councilman Joe Brown. Brown put on a show in front of our new mayor Tuesday, proclaiming himself to be "a real black man" during an argument in a council meeting.

I think it's important for us to call out the people who continue to engage in this type of racial divisiveness. If this isn't the type of leader you want representing you, let him know about it. Call Councilman Joe Brown or send him a letter. We need to get past this kind of pettiness and we need to do it today.

Mayor Wharton's election offers this community a new beginning. He's promised to recruit a new team of city leaders who can work together. Let's make sure these relics who continue to pursue the racial politics of the past know that they're out of step with a community that wants to move forward. Enough is enough.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
