MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A neighborhood near Rhodes College is on alert after vandals set fire to a vehicle.

It happened around 6:00 Saturday morning at the intersection of Vollintine and McLean. Police say someone put a rag into a car's gas filler and set it on fire.

"All of a sudden I heard this big boom," Lisa Hudson said. "My boyfriend's screaming 'your car's on fire!' I came and looked out the window and my car is on fire."

Hudson is thankful she and her family weren't hurt after the malicious attack.

A neighbor saw the flames and called 911. Firefighters showed up just as Hudson saw the fire.

"They just pulled up, and cops pulled up too. It was really crazy," she said "They hosed it all down, and found this sock stuffed in the gas tank. They said it appeared someone had purposely set on fire."

Hudson says she has no idea who would do such a thing. She says she has become so fed up with crime in the city, she's considering moving out of Memphis.

Hudson also wants the arsonist to know he could have killed someone.

"Come on, this is a neighborhood, we can't even park our cars in front of our homes? You could have burned my house down. It's ridiculous, it's insane. Makes you want to leave Memphis," she said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. Hudson plans to get involved in the Vollintine Evergreen Neighborhood Watch program - if she decides to stay.
