NEW YORK, NY (WMC-TV) - A Colonial Middle School student is in the home stretch of a contest that sent her to New York for an appearance Monday on NBC's Today Show.

The contest, 'Today's Kid Reporter,' asks viewers to vote on 'the next Matt or Meredith."

Deidra Shores was all smiles on Monday's edition of Today as she debuted a story she produced for the contest, focused on anchor Matt Lauer.  Armed with a microphone and a camera, the 12-year old is shown going around Memphis looking for Matt Lauer in the same way Lauer goes around the world looking for travel spots.

"We all understood why Matt postponed his trip around the world, but I've been hearing rumors that he's here in Memphis and I'm investigating," she says in the video.

Deidra is competing against youngsters from around the country.

Voting for the contest runs through Tuesday, and winners will be announced Wednesday morning on Today.  If she wins, Deidra said she plans to scream and the call all her friends to tell them about it.
