The Memphis Animal Shelter is not the first city-run facility to make headlines recently for deteriorating into crisis mode. Essentially, we saw the same sort of neglect in the previous administration's management of the rape crisis center and other programs.

Animal advocates have been complaining for years about the conditions at the Animal Shelter. Law enforcement officials said the raid on the place this week essentially verified that the horrifying accusations were true.

Like many problems facing us here in the Mid South, this is one where we can all pitch in to help. First and foremost, people need to take personal responsibility to spay or neuter their pets.

Also, we need to organize and support community efforts to control the pet population. No matter how well the city of Memphis runs this facility, the sad fact is that thousands of dogs and cats will be euthanized there every year.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
