SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Business is booming Southaven, where three new retail stores are looking to draw new shoppers to northern DeSoto County.

With the addition of hhgregg and Bed, Bath and Beyond to Southaven Towne Center, shoppers have new stores and more choices.  Southaven Planning Director Whitney Choat said officials weren't too concerned when the old tenants left.

"Even in this economy right now, we still have a lot of your big franchise stores contacting us looking for locations," Choat said.

Choat attributes the demand to population, saying Southaven pulls shoppers from Memphis to Grenada, thanks to its central locations.

The new stores are similar to their predecessors, Circuit City and Linens 'N Things.  Choat believes the new stores will perform better than their predecessors.

"In the stores that left, people have to understand they left nationwide or regionally," she said. "It wasn't because the stores weren't doing well here in Southaven."

hhgregg's new store in Southaven is the company's first in Mississippi.  Manager Aaron Winters said shoppers will like what they have to offer.

"We just offer something a little bit different," he said. "We've got a larger selection of appliances and electronics, and our service level is the best in the area - best in the country."

Shoppers like Billie Doss are hoping for the best.

"It was weird to think an appliance store just went out, but this one seems like it may offer a bunch of better deals," Doss said.

A third new store, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts, is scheduled to open at Southaven Towne Center next February in the space left vacant when World Market closed.
