Dover Motorsports closes Memphis Motorsports Park

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Dover Motorsports Inc. announced Friday it is closing the Memphis Motorsports Park after a deal to sell the racetrack fell through.

The Dover, Del.-based company said the facility had been under an agreement of sale to Gulf Coast Entertainment for $10 million, but Gulf Coast was unable to get financing.

Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, said NASCAR has approved the move of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to the Nashville Superspeedway and the NASCAR Nationwide Series events to Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis, Mo.

"This was a difficult decision for us, but one that ultimately was dictated by economics," McGlynn said.  "We greatly appreciate the many years of dedication shown by our Memphis employees and their efforts to make Memphis such a great destination for the racing community."

Ticket refunds for 2010 events will be mailed out to fans in the next few weeks.
