MUNFORD, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South band is in the running to be named the best in the nation.  The Munford High School band is on its way to Annapolis Maryland for that competition.

During a final rehearsal Wednesday, the drum line set the beat as band members practice for one final time before hitting the road.

"It's exciting, it's nerve-wracking too.  I don't know what it's going to be like - I'm excited," said freshman band member Josh Lawrence.

All season, the band has been perfecting their routine, Emergence of Triumph, all in hopes of walking away being the best band in the nation.

From field line-up to the music itself, director Barry Trobaugh makes sure everyone is on the same page.

"It's really hard sometimes you get like stressed and say oh my goodness...but you have to do what he says and work smarter," said senior band member Angelique Carter.

The 170 member band just took home the top spot in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.  They won the Bandmasters competition last weekend at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.

Even though the band is used to the spotlight, winning first place nationally would take the cake.

"I'm fulfilled," Trobaugh said. "I've seen my students do the show the way I know they can do it.  I hope we have one more show left in us."

Munford's band has also been invited to the White House on Saturday. There, they hope to perform for President Barack Obama.

Band members say they're just focused on performing their best.

"That's all I think about when I'm marching...nothing else but executing my set and music well," Lawrence said.

And good music is exactly what this band hopes will bring them home with a national title.

The Munford High School band is scheduled to perform this Sunday at the Naval Academy Stadium in Annapolis Maryland.
