MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Sexual abuse, moving their convention and taking back neighborhoods were the hot topics at a COGIC meeting Thursday.

As COGIC members assembled for what could be their last Convocation in Memphis, Presiding Bishop Charles Blake called a news conference to address charges of sexual misconduct in the church.

"These despicable and un-Godly acts will not be tolerated," Blake said Thursday.

At the press conference, Blake announced plans to beef up COGIC's sexual misconduct policy for its 6 million members.  Plans include background screenings, sexual abuse education, a code of conduct and training on how to spot and report sexual abuse will now be mandatory.

Blake said a resolution addressing these goals will be adopted during this year's convocation.

"Contrary to what you may read in a blog or in any other publication, the Church of God in Christ has been and shall be committed to providing and maintaining an environment that is free from sexual misconduct," Blake said.

COGIC's move to St. Louis was also a hot topic.  Blake said COGIC will continue to hold two other major church meetings in Memphis, and he left the door open for the possibility of more endeavors.

"We are investing and expanding the property of our headquarters to build a high tech center for on line education," he said.

COGIC leaders also talked about a new internet based urban initiative aimed at improving job education and financial condition for not only members, but for anyone who taps into COGIC's online systems.
