NEW ALBANY, MS (WMC-TV) - A pit bull attacked and killed a one-year-old girl Thursday afternoon near New Albany, officials said.

The attack happened in a house trailer on County Road 87 in Union County.  Sheriff's Department spokesperson Jimmy Whitten said the dog attacked the child as her babysitter was putting away groceries.

"The dog pried the door open, came in behind them, and when she put the child down, she followed the two brothers into the bedroom," Whitten said. "And that's when the altercation between the dog and the young child occurred."

According to investigators, the babysitter regularly took care of the child at night, while her parents were at work.  Officials said the owners of the trailer had several dogs on the property, including two that were not chained up.

No charges have been filed, but Whitten said the investigation would continue.

"What we're trying to do is interview as many people as we can, assess what we've got but its a tragedy to the family," he said.

Terry Whaley, who lives nearby with his fiance, said he doesn't trust pit bulls.

"Put it like this: knowing how pit bulls are, if I see one going to or coming from work, I'm gonna get it before it gets me," Whaley said.

There is no leash law in Union County, but according to Whitten, the issue of pit bulls running loose has been a problem in the past.

Officials have not released the identity of the victim or the babysitter.
