WALLS, MS (WMC-TV) - Americans across the country paused Wednesday to thank Veterans for their service.

In North Mississippi, Walls Elementary School held its annual Veterans Day salute to those who fought and died for the cause of freedom.

"It's a very special day, because without the veterans we wouldn't be here," said Faye Starnes, who services as a nurse during the Korean War.

Starnes was one of many veterans who gathered from all branches of the military to attend the celebration. For both young and old, it was a time to reflect and pay homage as a band played and the children sang in tribute.

Mississippi State Representative John Mayo, a Vietnam veteran, spoke at the event.   Military service is in Mayo's blood, as his mother, father and brothers all served their country.

Mayo said that story needs to be told.

"People cannot fully understand what vets and their families have gone through when their husband, wives, moms and dads are off to war," he said.

Fourth grade student Lateruis Bridges was one person in attendance who knows the sacrifice of the current war.  His mother, a member of the Air Force, is currently training in Biloxi.

"I just want to come there with her instead of being down here," he said.
