SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC-TV) - Members of the community gathered at a Mid-South church Sunday evening to remember local children who have died from abuse and neglect.

A candlelight vigil at News Sardis Baptist Church in Southeast Shelby County was dedicated to the memory of children like toddler brothers Ladereon and Catereon Dunn, who died in a house fire last month after their mother left them home alone while she shopped.

Other children remembered include 10-month-old Wynter Roberts, whose teenage babysitter was recently charged with her murder, and 15-year-old Alex "Tre" Bolar, who was found shot to death next to a playground earlier this month. His family never reported him missing.

The Memphis Child Advocacy Center holds a flag-raising ceremony every time a local child dies of abuse and neglect. The organization raised their flag twice last week.

So far this year, eight children have died as a result of abuse or neglect. 14 children died in 2008.
