MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An entire school celebrated a local student's big win as the Today Show's kid reporter during a party Monday.  Through music and dance, seventh and eighth graders at Colonial Middle School honored Deidra Shores, the Mid-South's newest celebrity.

For Shores, the nationwide winner of the Today Show's Kid Reporter contest, it was a warm welcome back.

"So many people have brought it to my attention, 'Oh,you're a role model for people,'" Shores laughed.

Hundreds of Shore's friends, classmates, and family were there as Mayor A C Wharton presented her with a special gift.

"You're not a president, or a king, but you are our own queen, and you have a key to the city," Wharton said.

Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash officially acknowledged Monday as "Deidra Shores Day" across the Memphis City School system, as did Shelby County.

"She represents a spirit of accomplishment, achievement, energy, passion and enthusiasm," Cash said.

Shores said she was excited about being a Kid Reporter, and her first assignment aboard a cruise ship.

"It was really fun, a great time," she said. "I got to meet the captain and the cruise director."

Shores said she is looking forward to juggling her school work with her new-found fame on NBC.
