GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC-TV) - A Germantown man has been charged with second degree murder in the death of his 16-month-old child Saturday evening.

According to police, officers were called to the Fountain Square Condominiums Saturday evening after a report that a child was unconscious there.  According to Germantown Police spokesperson Rodney Bright, it was Morris who called 911.

"He made the call himself," Bright said.

The child was transported to Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown, where he was pronounced dead.  After an autopsy, the Shelby County Medical Examiner concluded the child died as a result of blunt force trauma to his abdomen, which caused internal bleeding and organ damage.

Investigators charged the child's father, 27-year-old Curtis Lee Morris, Jr., with second degree murder in the child's death.

Germantown police say Morris hit his son in the stomach on purpose. The arrest ticket does not say how, why, or with what, and investigators declined to elaborate.

"There's still many things that need to be followed up on as to the circumstances that led to, to that injury," Bright said.

Morris is being held in the Germantown jail on $300,000.  Morris will appear in court on December 9.

Police say he has another child, who is currently staying with grandparents. Neither police nor neighbors could provide any information about the baby's mother.
