MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphian Deidra Shores was recognized Monday by the Shelby County Commission, but the accolades did not stop there.

Weeks into her new job as the Today Show's Kid Reporter, Shores still can't believe all the top honors she is receiving.

"I'm in shock right now," she said Monday.

Adding to her excitement, the Colonial Middle School student is mentioned in this week's People magazine.

"When I saw it, I didn't even care about the article," she said. "My picture is in People magazine. Oh my Gosh!  Not a lot of people get to be in People magazine.  Know what I mean?"

Monday, Shelby County Commissioners commended Shores for winning the contest, saying it was a job well done.

Shores, meanwhile, is trying to prevent success from going to her head.

"I'm just trying to stay as humble as possible, because I know it's very easy for me to slip into the 'I don't have to do this because I was on TV,'" she said. "I'm trying to stay as humble as possible and keep myself grounded."

And Shores says she's thankful for the support from everyone, including Memphis City Schools.

"MCS Schools is amazing, she said. "I did some radio spots and some TV things with them.  Memphis is really behind me."

Shores said NBC has not yet given her another assignment, but she remains anxious to see what it will be.
