MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Shelby County first-grader has been suspended for carrying a gun to school.

Highland Oaks Elementary School Principal Carol Mason sent a letter home Friday to parents saying a .22-caliber pistol was found in the 6-year-old boy's backpack.

The gun never made into the school building.  Officials said students saw the gun on the child's bus and told the driver, who in turn passed word of the weapon to administrators.

The gun, which was not loaded, was inside the child's backpack.

"This is a prime example of why we encourage students to come forward when they see or hear anything that could impact school safety," Mason said in her letter.

The child was taken into police custody and suspended for 180 days.

Sheriff's investigators say the case now belongs to the District Attorney, whose office must decide if any adults face any charges.
