MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The body of an elderly man was found after a fire Monday afternoon in the 3600 block of Boxtown Road in Memphis.

The fire was reported around 4:00 p.m., and firefighters were able to quickly bring it under control.

Family and friends say the man who died was 84-year-old Charles McKhai.

"He was a good man, cared for us the ones who didn't have fathers in our life he was our dad," Shundra Britton, the victim's niece said. "He was like everybody's dad."

McKhai's care taker Alice Brown just saw the elderly man Monday morning, a matter of hours before the fire broke out.

"He was very weak this morning when I saw him, he ate his breakfast, I helped him get dressed, he was getting kind of weak," Brown said.

Brown says McKhai's heater started the fire.

"He burned the heater he probably put wood in the heater."

Family and friends say McKhai was a good person.

"That was my role model, everything you see here, that was him," Lonnie Britton, the victim's nephew said.

Brown says when she left McKhai he was in good spirits. The last thing she said to him was, "call me if you need me."

Instead Brown got a call from McKhai's alarm company letting her know about the fire. Fire investigators aren't yet sure if the fire killed McKhai or if he died of natural causes before the fire started.

They don't suspect arson or foul play.
