MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - At the Shack Sports bar on Riverdale Road Wednesday night, friends of Ruby Wilson raised money for the Queen of Beale Street.

But there haven't been a lot of good times for Ruby Wilson this year. The blues, gospel and soul singer was struck down by a stroke in January.  Wednesday night was the first time she was able to return the favor.

"I had back surgery," Wilson said,  "I had surgery on my brain to see if my brain was dead. Everything has happened to me but I'm still here."

Still here, and singing again after months of physical therapy.

"I learned how to spell again, how to read and write and learn my ABC's," Wilson said.

Health hasn't been the only hardship for Wilson. Her health insurance was canceled after she fell ill. She's lost almost everything, going from a 12 room house to one room with a couch.

Wednesday was one of several fundraiser's that have been held for Wilson to help her get back on her feet.

Singing is something that, for a time, she thought she might never do again.

"I couldn't remember words," she said. "My brain was not functioning with my lips. It would not work.  I kept telling myself, 'You can do it. You can do it."

Wilson said she has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. She's grateful to be alive and back on stage, where she belongs.
