Food Drive donations to help people across the Mid-South

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The money and canned goods you donate during Wednesday's Action News 5 Holiday Food Drive will go beyond the Mid-South Food Bank.  From there, the food goes to feeding centers around the Mid-South.

Among the needy, a popular building on Cleveland Avenue is called the radio station.  But the building no longer holds a radio station.  Instead, it's now a place where many Mid-South families go to get a free meal.

Volunteers at the St. Vincent Depaul Food Mission say the mission fills a big need in the community seven days a week.

"We're feeding 200 to 250 people a day," said volunteer Dianne Cooper. "The need is pretty strong. We run real low on things sometimes."

And Cooper knows.  Long before she started volunteering, she was among the many who stopped by the mission every day, hoping for a free meal.

"There's not only homeless people coming through here. We have people that have lived on supplemental income. They depend on us when their food stamps run out," Cooper said.

The mission is one of dozens around Memphis that depend on the Mid-South Food Bank to stay open.  Volunteers say the Mid-South Food Bank depends on events like the WMC-TV Holiday Food drive to see them through.

"That will help me tremendously - very much," Cooper said. "All the food that I can get to put in this pantry to feed the homeless helps, no matter what it is, it helps."

The Action News 5 Holiday Food Drive is scheduled for Wednesday between 5:00am and 6:30pm.  For a list of places where you can donate, click here.
