Fire devastates Germantown family's dream home

GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC-TV) - A huge fire destroyed an 8,000 square foot home on Devonshire Cove early Saturday morning.

Homeowner Mark Murphy said a dream home that took a year to build was destroyed in just 70 minutes. Inside, a lifetime of memories - everything from Christmas ornaments to family bibles - was turned into a pile of ashes.

"We basically got out with the clothes on our backs," Murphy said.

Murphy discovered the fire after his alarm company called at 3:45 Saturday morning.  The fire escaped through the chimney liner near the house's firebox, and then spread up the wall and throughout the attic and house.

"When we went to bed, we always make it a point not to have a flaming fire in the fire place," Murphy said. "It was just embers and coals."

Monday, Murphy's wife worked to salvage photos of their two children.  Meanwhile, Murphy himself described a silver lining he's found during the disaster.

"At four o'clock in the morning the neighbors coming out and offering food, clothing, a place to go stay," he said.

Murphy says fire fighters were both fast-acting and compassionate.

"I actually had to fight three or four of them from wanting to hug me and give me an embrace," he said.

Fortunately, insurance will allow his family to dream up a new dream home, but in the meantime, Murphy said, they will survive with the basics.
