MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A man who was robbed and stuffed into the trunk of a car that was set on fire has died.

Tuesday, investigators said Kelvin Cooper, 38, had died at The MED.

Crime scene tape kept onlookers from getting too close to a burned out four-door sedan from which a robbery victim was rescued late Monday afternoon on Bridgeway Drive.

Memphis police said Cooper was fully engulfed when witnesses got him out of the trunk and used a water hose to try and douse the flames.

"I just saw the burnt car," recalled neighbor Nicole Boykin.

She's a single mother who lives with her son not far from where the man was set on fire.

"It's kind of terrible because these apartments over here are already ran down," Boykin said.  "Just a few homeowners over here and it's terrible about them bringing it over here."

Investigators told Action News 5 that Cooper was accosted somewhere else by three suspects who brought him to the complex.  They robbed him before they stuffed him inside the trunk, poured gasoline on him, then set him on fire.

It's an horrific crime that made Boykin want to leave.

"I'm gonna be putting a for sale sign on my unit and looking for a new place soon," she said.

Witnesses who saw the suspects set the car on fire and leave the scene were questioned while police began their search for the three men.

Police did not provide clear descriptions of the suspects or the type of car they may be driving.
